PCMark 8 Storage Consistency Test is one of our favorite benchmarks. Nowadays, many drives are well optimized for high benchmark scores when they are empty, but what separates the professional players from the amateurs is how it stands up to a truly punishing workload. PCMark 8's Storage Consistency Test is designed exactly for this purpose. Going through five phases -- precondition, degradation, steady state, recovery, and clean up -- to extend beyond real world application simulations, this benchmark takes just over two days to complete, but the results are revealing of a SSD's true capabilities. Overall, the Western Digital Black NVMe SSD 1TB was excellent. It did not completely dominate this test against its peers; the OCZ RD400A 512GB remains to be the winner by being about 10% faster than the Black NVMe 1TB on average. That said, the Black NVMe was about 30% faster on average than the Patriot Hellfire M.2 240GB, which was quite impressive. Just for fun, I compared the Black NVMe against a budget NVMe drive, the Gigabyte M.2 PCIe SSD 256GB, where the WD Black was, on average, over 400% faster.
