About HD Tach 3.0.1.0
HD Tach is a low level hardware benchmark for random access read/write storage devices such as hard drives, removable drives (ZIP/JAZZ), flash devices, and RAID arrays. HD Tach uses custom device drivers and other low level Windows interfaces to bypass as many layers of software as possible and get as close to the physical performance of the device possible.
Now, it is the time for good old HD Tach. While HD Tach is more of a drag race than a clear indication of real life performance and has been around for a really long time, it is an excellent storage performance reference between hard drives for more than a decade. Back in the days, if your average speed exceeded 60MB/s, you had a seriously fast drive. Where does the Western Digital Red Pro WD141KFGX 14TB come in? With an average read speed of 261.7MB/s and tested random access time of 15.2ms, the read speed is mind-blowingly fast for mechanical hard drive, but the random access time leaves a bit to be desired. It is a virtual tie with the Seagate's IronWolf Pro ST14000NE0008 14TB at 255.3MB/s, but the IronWolf Pro only had an 8.1ms access time. Meanwhile, the Red WD140EFFX 14TB had an average read speed of 227.7MB/s and tested random access time of only 8.6ms. I am not sure why the WD141KFGX's random access time is so much higher, but it is consistent with other programs we have used.
