Google Preps Pixel 2 ChromeBook, New X Server Replacement "Freon"

From DailyTech: It's been two years since Google Inc. (GOOG) announced the Chromebook Pixel, a 12.85-inch high-resolution, ultrathin laptop which debuted at $1,299 USD. At the time of its launch in Feb. 2013, the device appeared ahead of its time with a number of unique ideas like its 3:2 aspect ratio display (a compromise between the human eye's natural 4:3 ratio and the 16:9 ratio that's popular for film).

Featuring a 2,560 × 1,700 pixel (239 ppi) screen, a carved aluminum chassis, and sporty Intel Corp. (INTC) Core i5-Series Ivy Bridge processors, the Chromebook proved that Chrome OS wasn't just for the low end.

But with a steady pace of refreshes to Apple, Inc.'s (AAPL) 13-inch Retina MacBook Pro (which starts at $1,299 USD as well) and to rival Windows ultrathin notebook lines, the Pixel is looking a little behind the times.

Bloggers at OMGChrome have good news, though -- a new version is coming. Google's new director of Android and Chrome, Renee Niemi, let word of the refresh slip at the "Google TeamWork 2015" in San Diego, Calif., remarking:

"We do have a new Pixel coming out and it will be coming out soon. We will be selling it but I just have to set your expectations: this is a development platform. This is really a proof of concept. We don’t make very many of these — we really don’t. And […] our developers and our Googlers consume 85% of what we produce. But yes, we do have a new Pixel coming out."
