From PC Mag: If you go out and buy a low-end, entry-level laptop or desktop PC today, chances are it will have an Intel Apollo Lake processor inside carrying the Celeron or Pentium branding. These are the just good enough, cheap processors that allow for light workloads, web browsing, and long battery life.
The chip generation that follows Apollo Lake is called Gemini Lake, and details about what to expect from these new chips is starting to leak, including a block diagram revealing quite a bit of detail.
The good news is, the 14nm Gemini Lake chips look to offer a 10-15 percent performance boost over the Apollo Lake chips shipping today. They also include 4MB of cache (double Apollo Lake) for up to four cores, and a 4-wide pipeline (they can decode four instructions per cycle, Apollo Lake is 3-wide). Combined, this accounts for the performance gains.
There's also support for 2400MHz DDR4 RAM, HDMI 2.0, DisplayPort 1.2a, eDP 1.4, eMMC 5.1, an embedded wireless controller, USB 3.0, PCIe, and SATA 3 interfaces. As for graphics, just like Apollo Lake these new chips will include a Gen9LP GPU which have 18 execution units, meaning HD Graphics 505.
Intel is expected to launch Gemini Lake Celeron and Pentium processors before the end of 2017. What that means for consumers is, when they do, those $200 laptops will be getting a 10-15 percent performance bump and any remaining Apollo Lake-equipped devices could be discounted.
