IOS 4.2 Golden Master Released, iPhones Target-ed

From DailyTech: Apple released the Golden Master (GM) version -- usually the final shipping build -- of iOS 4.2 yesterday. The purpose of the update is to bring the iPad in line with other iOS 4.x-version features like multitasking and folders, but there are some new features as well.

The beta version of iOS 4.2 became available back in September, just a week after 4.1 was released. 4.2 Beta included three new updates: the ability to search websites within Safari, AirPrint wireless printing, and AirPlay multimedia wireless streaming. While the other two features are self-explanatory, what AirPlay does is wirelessly stream music, video, and photos from an iOS 4.2 device to Apple TV and music to AirPlay receivers like the AirPort Express.

IOS 4.2 also adds volume and brightness controls to the multitasking bar for quick access. And, as MacRumors further speculates, the new OS allows you to log into a MobileMe account with an Apple ID, which could mean that some previously paid features of MobileMe will be available for free. That has yet to be confirmed, though.

The update should also take care of that pesky security hole we warned you of last week, which allows others to bypass the security passcode and grants them access to some private information.

IOS 4.2 is expected to be released to consumers at some point in November. The GM release bolsters that projection.
