Nintendo Quietly Drops Wii Pricing in the U.S.

From X-bit Labs: Several partners of Nintendo have decreased pricing of Wii game consoles in the U.S. The decision will help to popularize the aging system going forward in general as well as during Summer season in particular.

A number of leading retailers and retailers in the USA - including Amazon, Best Buy, Target and others - now sell Nintendo Wii game consoles for $169.99, down from $199 earlier. The last time the companies sold Wii systems at such price points was on Black Friday last November, but at this time it looks like the discount price is here to last.

Sales of Nintendo Wii - which does not support high-definition video games, but which had unique selling point on the form of motion-sensing game controller - have been slowing down for some time now after both Microsoft Corp. and Sony Computer Entertainment launched their own motion-sensing devices, such as Kinect and Move. Dropped prices will likely boost interest towards Wii systems and consequently games for the platform, but will not revive sales of the console, which is morally outdated.

Given the fact that Nintendo plans to release a new game console with better technical capabilities by the end of 2012, the price of Wii will likely drop once again this holiday season to keep sales of the current platform on relatively high levels.
