Although we have not covered a motherboard with an mSATA slot since the Gigabyte GA-Z97X-UD3H-BK in 2014, the Kingston UV500 240GB (mSATA) wraps up our trio of reviews in the series by covering all their bases. The Kingston UV500 is also available in 2.5" SATA and M.2 2280 form factors. If you have been following our reviews in the past few months, the mSATA variant of the UV500 240GB gives you no surprises in performance; it is electrically identical to the 2.5" SATA version and it delivers exactly the same on the charts. This means it has reasonably good write endurance and power consumption. but only performs well among its budget SSD peers in simple linear workloads. Despite an improvement compared to its predecessor, the UV400, the UV500 is no champion when it comes to medium to heavy workloads. That said, there are not many mSATA drives around, and if you are looking for a decent SSD with a long five-year warranty at press time, the Kingston UV500 may be one of the few choices you have. For about $80 at press time, you can do better, and you can do worse. It is good Kingston has all their bases covered, after all.
Kingston provided this product to APH Networks for the purpose of evaluation.
Since April 30, 2007, Number Ratings have been dropped for all CPUs, motherboards, RAM, SSD/HDDs, and graphics cards. This is to ensure the most appropriate ratings are reflected without the inherent limits of using numbers. Everything else will continue using the Number Rating System.
