Kingston SSDNow V+200 120GB (Page 10 of 10)

Page 10 - Conclusion

The Kingston SSDNow V+200 120GB is an affordable performance business solid state drive that combines SandForce's renowned SF-2281 controller with quality Intel 25nm asynchronous memory. For the most part, I think Kingston got it right, whether you are an end-user or business customer. How so? Well, firstly, the retail packaging. If you are working in the IT department of a large company looking to order a big stack of these drives to upgrade some PCs, the environmentally-friendly box will definitely make Mother Nature happy. Even if you are picking up one or two of these drives for home use, it is certainly refreshing to be able to drop all the trash into the recycle bin. Secondly, the bundle. Not only is the upgrade kit's Acronis disk cloning software and USB enclosure a huge plus, as it carries a very small price premium over a bare drive, the 3.5" adapter rail is also a much better solution than the traditional tray approach in terms of chassis compatibility. Thirdly, the performance. Sticking right in line with other SF-2281 based drives in the market niche, the Kingston SSDNow V+200 120GB is everything you can and should expect. With that in mind, there is one area that requires attention from the manufacturer. Generally speaking, I think Kingston completely missed the boat on the 'affordability' section -- searching up most online retailers at press time puts this SSD, even in its bare drive form, in the upper range of the price bracket compared to other 120GB units. Considering the fact that a Patriot Pyro 120GB is only about $120 after mail in rebate at press time with similar performance, Kingston needs to slash at least $50 off its $190 price tag (upgrade kit) to attract people to buy. After all, owning one is awesome; having two is simply epic.

Since April 30, 2007, Number Ratings have been dropped for all CPUs, motherboards, RAM, SSD/HDDs, and graphics cards. This is to ensure the most appropriate ratings are reflected without the inherent limits of using numbers. Everything else will continue using the Number Rating System.

The Kingston SSDNow V+200 120GB is the perfect affordable performance business SSD in upgrade kit form -- if it was a little bit more affordable.
