Patriot Supersonic Rage 2 256GB Review (Page 8 of 8)

Page 8 – Conclusion

When I first received the Patriot Supersonic Rage 2 256GB, I was met with several surprises. For one, the storage capacity is amazing. At 128GB or 256GB, this is not necessarily the largest flash drive I have seen, but is big nonetheless. Secondly, the drive is physically tiny despite its huge capacity. The cap less design is implemented masterfully, and small things like a notification light are good to see. Thirdly, the Rage 2 is one of the more expensive flash drives too. At a retail price of around $200 USD at press time, this drive hits the wallet at around $0.78/GB. When I actually plugged this USB drive into my computer, I was met with a few more shocks. The read performance is without a doubt record-breaking compared to what we have tested in the past, and indeed this is one supersonic drive. It outperformed practically every USB drive in this department, and thus is a sight to behold. On the flip side, the problem with Rage 2 was revealed in its write performance. Despite testing this drive on multiple computers, through multiple benchmarks, we were unable to attain any write numbers close to the advertised one. Even if we forgot the numbers Patriot provided us, in comparison to other USB flash drives and external hard drives, the Patriot Supersonic Rage 2's write performance was only average at best. As I requested in the Kingston HyperX Fury review, it would be great if manufacturers could close the disparity between the read and write performance. Patriot has attempted to do so, but unfortunately in real life we are unable to attain their estimated write numbers. This is disappointing, but this drive has its positives, especially in the physical design and the read abilities. Improvements in the write capabilities while keeping the same read speeds would make the next Patriot drive all the rage. Literally.

Patriot provided this product to APH Networks for the purpose of evaluation.

APH Review Focus Summary:
8/10 means Definitely a very good product with drawbacks that are not likely going to matter to the end user.
7/10 means Great product with many advantages and certain insignificant drawbacks; but should be considered before purchasing.
-- Final APH Numeric Rating is 7.4/10
Please note that the APH Numeric Rating system is based off our proprietary guidelines in the Review Focus, and should not be compared to other sites.

Supersonic read speeds can be found in the Patriot Supersonic Rage 2, but the write performance caps this drive from its full potential.
