Page 8 - Conclusion
Can storage be interesting if it is a USB flash drive? I would say not typically, but the Patriot Supersonic Rage Prime 1TB proves to be an exception with its unbelievably good performance. Its specifications suggest is it has up to 600MB/s read. This is an impressive figure, but judging from my past experiences of products in this category, all it means is yet another drive with fast linear performance and nothing else. The fact Patriot does not have a rated write speed made me feel like this is probably nothing special. However, I simply could not believe my eyes when I got down to testing. The Supersonic Rage Prime 1TB has the same compact and light form factor as the Supersonic Rage Pro, but its performance is several leagues ahead. Not only does it exceed the rated read speed by routinely hitting 800MB/s or above, but this USB flash drive also delivers portable SSD-level performance both in linear read/write and IOPS-demanding applications. I have never seen this before, and I had to retest a few more times just to verify this is legitimate. I am also a fan of its capless design. The big thing holding back the Patriot Supersonic Rage Prime in my opinion is its hard plastic enclosure. A metal enclosure will make the drive feel much more solid and give a stronger impression of build quality. Also, if you put this USB flash drive under intensive workloads, it may throttle performance due to the intense heat generated, so a metal enclosure is beneficial for better heat dissipation. At the end of the day, the question is not whether the Patriot Supersonic Rage Prime 1TB is a good USB flash drive or not. It obviously is. The question is whether a USB flash drive is necessary in 2021. If your answer to that is yes, you can pick one up for $150 at press time. It costs more than actual portable SSDs like the Crucial X8 1TB, but hey, its performance is in the same league at a fraction of the size.
