HD Tach is a low level hardware benchmark for random access read/write storage devices such as hard drives, removable drives (ZIP/JAZZ), flash devices, and RAID arrays. HD Tach uses custom device drivers and other low level Windows interfaces to bypass as many layers of software as possible and get as close to the physical performance of the device possible.

Now, it is the time for good old HD Tach. While HD Tach is more of a 'drag race' than a clear indication of real life performance, and has been around for a really long time, it is an excellent storage performance reference between hard drives for more than the last decade. Back in the days, if your average speed exceeded 60MB/s, you have a seriously fast drive. Where does the Seagate NAS HDD ST8000VN0002 8TB come in? With an average read speed of 242.3MB/s, and tested random access time of 10.0ms, this is mind-blowingly fast for a mechanical hard drive. But how does it compare against the other products? Seagate's own Enterprise Capacity 3.5 HDD V.5 8TB came in at 240.6MB/s with 8.4ms access time. For the Western Digital 6TB drives, the Red Pro WD6001FFWX clocked in at 227.6MB/s, and the Black WD6001FZWX pulled 217.8MB/s in the same test. The Seagate ST8000VN0002 8TB. along with the ST8000NM0055 8TB, are both by far the fastest mechanical hard drive ever tested in HD Tach here at APH Networks, but the 8TB NAS HDD's enterprise counterpart has a considerably better random access time.
