SilverStone FLP02 Review

One line I remember from the last episode of my favorite show, The Office, is when Andy Bernard says, "I wish there was a way to know you're in the good old days before you have actually left them." In many ways, it is easy to pass life by quickly and not take a step back to bask in the day. In the moment, we often just think about what is next and, in doing so, forget how to process the current event. Granted, reminiscing usually is only for good things, because I am not sure if anyone chooses to relive bad memories. When it comes to computing, I often reminisce about the simpler use of computers. My childhood included playing Adobe Flash games, which was a quintessential experience. In elementary school, each class had about two to three PCs and during the winter, when it was too cold to go outside, we would crowd around a beige desktop tower and CRT monitor to watch someone play a round of a random game before we swapped out and let others have a turn. It was not until my third or fourth grade when all these older systems were replaced with black desktop towers that looked sleeker and were more performant. Today, we have a new computer case with all the vintage vibes. Sporting a beige appearance, the SilverStone FLP02 is a retro-themed enclosure with modern internals. Will this case transport us back to the good old days, or does it come with some cobwebs too? Let us read on to find out!

Today's review unit of the SilverStone FLP02 arrived from SilverStone's offices in Chino, California, USA. Traveling with FedEx and their Ground service, this plain brown corrugated cardboard box arrived at our APH Networks location here in Calgary, Alberta, Canada, in average condition. There is one big bump in a corner along with a few scratches, so we will see if anything translates further down.

Inside the shipping container, there is a standard retail container for the SilverStone FLP02. As you can see, there is a pretty sizable bruise in the one corner, but hopefully the damage inside is minimal. The box is just a brown cardboard with printed black font and images on the sides. The SilverStone logo is clearly printed in one corner, while the name FLP02 is printed on the other side. An outline of the FLP02 is in the middle. The tagline of "Retro-inspired tower chassis with high-performance cooling and expansion support" is below the product name. On the sides of the box, there are more specifications and features about the FLP02 in multiple languages.

Out of the box, the SilverStone FLP02 is packaged in a transparent plastic bag and sandwiched between two large white pieces of foam. Unfortunately, the damage continued inside, and one foam bracket completely shattered. I really wish SilverStone would use better packing material, as this foam is far too stiff to cushion impacts and the result is often messy. We have received a few damaged SilverStone cases in the past, and there is some damage to our FLP02, as you will see in this review. Moving on, a small cardboard box is found inside, which holds all the screws and other installation hardware. It also contains the keys for locking and unlocking the front I/O, some zip ties, and a PWM extension cable. No manual is included with the SilverStone FLP02, so you will need to look online if you have any questions about the installation process.

Before we continue, I have grabbed the specifications from the manufacturer's website for your reading pleasure:
