Western Digital Red Pro WD6001FFWX 6TB Review (Page 11 of 11)

Page 11 - Conclusion

The Western Digital Red Pro WD6001FFWX 6TB is, by far, the most power hungry NAS drive we have ever tested here at APH Networks. If you have read my Black WD6001FZWX 6TB review last month, this should come at no surprise to you. But does it really matter? When is the last time you have seen someone complain a Mercedes-AMG gets terrible fuel economy? An AMG is no Prius, and neither is the Red Pro. Like the WD Black it is based off of, the latest addition to the company's high performance NAS family aims to be at the forefront of speed and reliability for workload demanding system users. Equipped with a dual core processor and 128MB of cache, the WD6001FFWX is a class-leading performance hard drive at mega capacity. It is everything the Black WD6001FZWX is, plus shock protection, vibration protection, error recovery prevention, enhanced compatibility, improved balancing, and extended drive testing -- made totally appropriate for the application it was intended for. With a generous five year warranty to boot, is there anything the Western Digital Red Pro WD6001FFWX 6TB is not? Other than saving power, not really. Oh yeah, it is also kind of loud, but I doubt this will bother many people, considering most NAS systems will be installed in another room anyway. For about $290 at press time, you will need to evaluate your priorities. Do you have a big NAS? Do you need a hard drive with a large capacity to handle intense workload at the expense of price and power consumption? If you answered 'yes' to any of the above, the $40 premium it commands over the regular Red 6TB will be well worth it. After all, performance does come at a price, both literally and figuratively.

APH:Renewal Award
Since April 30, 2007, Number Ratings have been dropped for all CPUs, motherboards, RAM, SSD/HDDs, and graphics cards. This is to ensure the most appropriate ratings are reflected without the inherent limits of using numbers. Everything else will continue using the Number Rating System.

The Western Digital Red Pro WD6001FFWX 6TB may be hungry for power, but are you a power hungry user? If so, you have found your NAS drive.
