Although the AVerMedia CamStream 4K BU113G2 is indeed a USB capture card, its primary use case is for use with a camera input. This lets users connect their higher quality image capture devices, such as DSLR or mirrorless cameras. This should be an improvement, as these professional options provide better video quality. For this reason, we also do not have a passthrough HDMI port for instant feedback, since most cameras will also let you monitor with the built in screen. Today, we will only be evaluating the AVerMedia CamStream 4K BU113G2 with a camera connected. I recorded with both AVerMedia's Streaming Center and the built-in Camera application in Windows 11.
Looking at the footage from my Canon R8, it should be no surprise we have excellent quality video. While I was recording, there was little latency between my movements and the captured movements on the screen, which does validate the low latency claims by AVerMedia. The video captured at 1080p at 60fps, although this does not really stretch the capabilities of the capture card. Also, YouTube maxes out at a frame rate of 60fps. Even so, the recorded footage was as I would expect for Canon R8's capability. There were no noticeable artifacts in the original recording. Audio was also captured, as this was through the built-in microphone on the camera. As such, the audio quality is not amazing, and those looking for better audio should swap the audio captured in their recording software.
Using the Camera application, I also captured a few pictures. At a minimum, the AVerMedia CamStream 4K BU113G2 does an excellent job at turning your camera into a high-quality webcam. It is true that many camera manufacturers already have software applications to allow this with their own software, but the CamStream 4K BU113G2 is an easy plug-and-play alternative. Personally, I did have to make a few changes to my camera so that it would not go into sleep or start dropping frames as part of power saving measures, so you should be aware of what changes you might need to make for your camera. Either way, the CamStream 4K was excellent at capturing the output.
