In my Patriot Viper Elite PC4-24000 2x8GB review earlier this month, I said "we will have to come to accept the days of pulling massive overclocks like I did on the Buffalo Firestix PC6400 2x512MB ten years ago is long gone". After attempting an overclock on the G.Skill Ripjaws V F4-2400C15D-32GVR 2x16GB, I may have spoken too early. I got especially curious after finding out the Ripjaws V uses the same Samsung K4A8G085WB memory chips as the Viper Elite DDR4-3000, but the Ripjaws V is specified a whole 600MHz slower. To see how much I can get out of our set today, I bumped the voltage right up to the 1.35V limit, and loosened up the timings to 17-17-17-39. As you can see in our screenshot above, even with these high density chips, the F4-2400C15D-32GVR is overclockable -- a pretty good overclocker at that. It is not as massive as the Firestix from ten years ago percentage-wise, but a 17% increase in frequency to 2800MHz is almost unheard of nowadays. For about $140 at press time, the G.Skill Ripjaws V 2x16GB is an impressive kit. It is very competitive in pricing, delivers great results on the benchmark charts, and as always, comes with a lifetime guarantee. Unless you cannot get past the looks of the heatspreaders, my recommendations today are simple: If you are looking for a high capacity, reasonably priced DDR4 kit in your new build, the F4-2400C15D-32GVR is the one to buy. Get two if you want 64GB. Because, you know, more is better.
