Kingston UV500 240GB (M.2) Review (Page 11 of 11)

Page 11 - Conclusion

Although the form factor has changed and the M.2 version features flash memory chips twice as dense as the ones found in the 2.5" SATA variant, its performance certainly has not: Kingston's UV500, in any form, is still a Kingston UV500. For about $80 at press time, it remains one of the lowest priced SSDs in the market, even considering the M.2 variant is about $10 more than the one in traditional form. The UV500 we are reviewing today shares the same long five-year warranty, reasonably good write endurance, and reduced power consumption as the UV500 (SATA) compared to the UV400, but the UV500 (M.2) also shares its shortcomings in delivering economy class performance with its economy class pricing. As it was with the rest of the UV500 series, this solid state drive did well in every simple linear workload, but fell quite a bit short of the competition when it came to medium to heavy workloads, although it was an improvement compared to its predecessor. In my personal opinion, the Kingston UV500 240GB (M.2) would have been a pretty decent choice for a super budget SSD if it can be had for $60 or less, because the Crucial MX500 250GB in M.2 2280 form can be had for $70 at press time -- a full $10 cheaper than the UV500 240GB M.2 and delivers superior performance almost across the board. It is safe to say the budget SSD market, even in the M.2 form, is heating up. Oh, what an age we live in.

The Kingston UV500 240GB is an economical M.2 format SSD with a long warranty, but they will need to lower the price to make it attractive against some stiff competition.
