Thecus N2310 Review (Page 8 of 8)

Page 8 - Conclusion

For about $125 at press time, is the Thecus N2310 an example of being smart with your money, or just a product for people who are plain cheap? Considering almost everything else in the category nowadays command a price of well over $200, the N2310's biggest distinction -- without much debate -- has to be its competitive price. On the other hand, as I have asserted in the beginning of this review, there is a fine line between being smart with your money and being cheap. Ultimately, it is important to grasp the concept of being smart with your money means to never sacrifice quality for cost, and here is where we need to evaluate our parameters. The Thecus N2310 is a no-nonsense NAS that comes in a pretty standard form factor with reasonably good build quality, despite being constructed almost entirely out of plastic. It also delivers surprisingly good network throughput for home use, while using minimal amount of power. That said, there is the uncool side of things, and I will have to say, it is mostly software related. Other than the annoying buzzing fan on the hardware side of the equation, ThecusOS 6 truly leaves a lot to be desired. Not only was it unnecessarily hard to initialize; its web configuration interface is whole a league and a bit behind what competitors such as ASUSTOR and QNAP has to offer. The bottom line is, if you are going to put your Thecus N2310 in your basement storage room, configure it to work as a network drive and forget about everything else it may or may not offer, then I would say you are being smart with your $125. Other than that, if you have more money to spend, there are tons of great products out in the market today.

Thecus provided this product to APH Networks for the purpose of evaluation.

APH Review Focus Summary:
6/10 means A product with its advantages, but drawbacks should not be ignored before purchasing.
-- Final APH Numeric Rating is 6.0/10
Please note that the APH Numeric Rating system is based off our proprietary guidelines in the Review Focus, and should not be compared to other sites.

The Thecus N2310 is a no-nonsense network attached storage system that delivers great performance for home users for a very competitive price. Software, on the other hand, has lots of room for improvement.
